A farmhouse standing on the ridge of a beautiful hill, a slope so gentle as to seem almost flat: hence the name, Pianoalto, of the Bava family’s farmhouse in Agliano.

Pianoalto is also our Nizza: with a history of viticulture behind them that dates back to the mid-1600s on the hills of Cocconato, the Bava family has always looked to Barbera as its centre of interest, and the magnificent lands of Agliano have fascinated us since the early 1990s for their great capacity to characterise this vine. Our first vintages in the area were research ones, to get to know the vineyards and understand how best to highlight the personality and potential of the Pianoalto farmhouse wines. The first bottle of Pianoalto on the market was from the 1996 vintage.

We invested energy, ideas and work in Nizza at a time when few people were yet thinking about its future. We believed in it right away, sharing projects and hopes, with trips, tastings and events, bringing the taste and beauty of this extraordinary corner of Piedmont to the world with us. The other two Bava farmsteads are in Cocconato and Castiglione Falletto.

In Cocconato, where the company was founded in 1911, they produce Stradivario, a precious Barbera d’Asti Superiore with a long ageing time, Viva in bottiglia, a wine from the Monferrato tradition that combines the elegance of the style of production of bottle-fermented wines with the authentic tradition of Piedmont, and the grapes for Thou Bianc, a surprising Piedmontese Chardonnay, Sauvignon Relais Bianc and Albarossa.

From the property in Castiglione Falletto in the province of Cuneo, in the heart of the Scarrone cru, come the Barolo Docg Bava and a fresh Nebbiolo. Aromatic from Piedmont have always been in the Bava tradition: in particular Malvasia, both still (Rosetta) and sparkling (Malvasia Rosé), Moscato d’Asti and Ruché di Castagnole Monferrato.

The importance of the soil and position in the wine’s final reflections are the reasons behind the Pianoalto cru. The use of the Piedmontese double barrel for ageing enhances its characteristics of origin and recognisability. The label bears as a trademark the strong and graphically essential sign of the brick sunshade on the farmhouse barn.
