Montalbera is owned by the Morando family who believe and invest by 3 generations in this particular wine-growing area of Monferrato in the Piemonte region. Production focuses mainly on the indigenous Ruchè variety. Montalbera is the main producer with 60% of global production. The main agency is located in Castagnole Monferrato with 115 hectares of vineyards, where the cellar used for fermentation and refining of wines is also located. The main varieties grown are: Ruchè, Barbera, Grignolino, Nebbiolo del Monferrato and Viognier. The Castagnole Monferrato cellar is not the only one. In Castaglione Tinella, in the San Carlo area, where the founder of the family, Enrico Riccardo Morando, was born, there is a second agricultural agency with 15 cultivated hectares. The main varieties grown are: Moscato DAsti, Chardonnay and Viognier.
The territories of Monferrato and the Langhe are really different. In the first, the composition is mainly composed of sand and clay with a little limestone residue. In the second, the composition is composed of clay, limestone and tuff. Climate change is becoming ever more serious. The summer of 2023 will remain among the hottest in recent years. There was no rain and the ripening of the grapes was irregular, which is why we brought forward the harvest to the end of August.
Ruchè is a rare indigenous vine from Piedmontese Monferrato. We do not know its exact origins because there are no documents containing its history. It is believed to have arrived in Piedmont thanks to monks who came from France in the Middle Ages. We attribute its expansion to Don Giacomo Cauda, he was the first to believe in this grape variety and to vinify it.
The Castagnole Monferrato winery is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Much attention has been paid to the barrel cellar, located in the underground part of the company where the "Le Selezioni Montalbera" are aged in French oak barrels, from Allier. We are a winery in constant evolution and experimentation, in addition to aging in steel and barrels, we have also started to refine the wine in terracotta amphorae.
