The Pico Maccario winery was established in 1997 in Mombaruzzo (Piedmont) on a 100-hectare vineyard in the heart of the DOCG Barbera dAsti region. From the very beginning it has been run by brothers Pico and Vitaliano Maccario who, due to their age and personal attitude, chose to make it a model of modernity, both in vineyard management and wine production. The Pico Maccario winery has always dedicated a large part of its resources to technological innovations and research in the vineyard, strong in the conviction that every change, if well-calibrated, can be the origin of ever higher quality wines, which of Italy reaches every corner of the world.
The corporate logo, designed by Sergio Bianco, consists of a shield in which a rose stands out. The shield has the shape of an equilateral triangle with harmoniously curved sides reminiscent of the upper part of the cup. The rose has always been the symbol of the winery: 4500 rose plants with a single clone have the dual function of indicating the starting point of each row and of signalling in advance, as per tradition, the diseases that could soon seize the vines. The Pico Maccario vineyards are planted to Barbera for 88 hectares, Moscato for 3 hectares, Merlot and Cabernet for a total of 2 hectares, Chardonnay for 2 hectares, Sauvignon Blanc to 2 hectares, and Viogner, Freisa and Favorita for a further 3 hectares in total.
Thanks to the clayey, medium-textured soil, Pico Maccario wines are varied and balanced, with a modern and versatile style that respects the original characteristics of the grapes and vineyards of origin. The production of Pico Maccario concentrates primarily on the grape variety typical of the region, namely the Barbera. The principal products of the range are: Barbera by Asti Sup. DOCG Epico (at the top of the line), Nizza DOCG Tre Roveri and Barbera from Asti DOCG Lavignone. In addition to the three top Barbera wines, the line also includes: Monferrato Bianco DOC Vita (Sauvignon Blanc - top of the range), Gavi del Comune di Gavi DOCG, Piemonte DOC Rosato Brut Rosè, Piemonte DOC Rosato Lavignone, Monferrato Bianco DOC Estrosa (a blend of three grapes: Sauvignon Blanc, Favorite and Viogner), Moscato dAsti DOCG Dolcevita.
The ageing is done in steel, in large barrels or barrels, always looking for the highest quality and in compliance with the original characteristics of the fruit. This is why the winery has always devoted itself to innovation and research in the vineyard, because technological innovation is the main way to achieve the highest quality of production.
