Established in 1901, the Cantina Terre Astesane di Mombercelli is the oldest cooperative in Southern Piedmont. Overlooked by the towns mediaeval castle, it is located in the centre of the Tiglione Valley in a frame of hills among the most suitable for viticulture and has for years been committed to the constant improvement of the quality of its wines, especially Barbera dAsti. The winery has about 150 members in the municipalities of Mombercelli, Vinchio, Agliano, Belveglio and Montaldo Scarampi who, with their families, cultivate 250 hectares of vineyards, producing 1,700,000 litres of wine annually, 70% of which is Barbera dAsti, followed by Grignolino, Cortese, Brachetto, Chardonnay, Freisa and others. Vineyards are monitored throughout the production cycle by a vineyard technician to produce high-quality grapes that are vinified with advanced technological equipment.
The carefully followed wine is refined and bottled on the estate with a yearly production of 100,000 bottles. The range of wines is wide with five different types of Barbera dAsti: the Maniman base, a vintage wine aged in steel, the La Barbera dAsti vintage wine of great structure not aged in wood, the Anno Domini a limited vintage selection aged only in the best vintages, the Barbera dAsti Superiore Savej obtained from selected grapes in historic vineyards over forty years old and exposed to the south aged in barriques, and the Nizza Mumbersè a super Barbera obtained from thinned grapes in historic vineyards, aged for 18 months in 225-litre barriques.
Mumbersè represents the best expression of the range of society, flanked by Piemonte Sauvignon Sabbione, a unique and elegant wine. The Grignolino dAsti Ganassa is very typical with its spicy aromas, the Cortese dellalto Monferrato Cortenovo is full-bodied, the Monferrato Dolcetto Collescuro is typical, the Freisa Asti Selvalonga and the Piemonte Chardonnay Cirivè, and the new Monferrato Rosso Ansema is elegant. The range is completed by Moscato dAsti Au su, Piemonte Brachetto Rosereto, Metodo Classico, Brachetto, Moscato and Barbera oak-aged grapes, Barbera Chinato and the line of typical sweet and savoury jarred products Sapori di Collina.
