Scarpa was founded in 1900 by Antonio Scarpa and quickly made a name for itself through the production of Piedmont’s great red wines – first and foremost Barbera d’Asti, Barolo and Barbaresco – alongside traditional Monferrato varieties such as Dolcetto, Freisa and dry Brachetto, as well as Vermouth di Torino. In 1949, the winery entered a new chapter under Mario Pesce, a pioneer in the revival of Barbera d’Asti, and his nephew Carlo Castino, a passionate oenologist and creator of the celebrated Barbera “La Bogliona”, Scarpa’s most iconic wine. Today, the estate owns approximately 28.5 hectares of vineyards in Monferrato, including 3.5 hectares in Nizza and 25 hectares in Castel Rocchero, home to the historic Poderi I Bricchi. A further 5 hectares lie across the hills of Barolo – the Monvigliero cru in Verduno and Roncaglie cru in La Morra – and Barbaresco, with the Canova cru in Neive. In the cellar, the wines are aged exclusively in large casks, followed by extended bottle ageing – an approach that has always remained true to Scarpa’s style, defined by purity, elegance and longevity.

MUNICIPALITY: Nizza Monferrato
CRU OR BLEND: Single vineyard in the hamlet of San Michele, Nizza Monferrato
VINEYARD SIZE: 3.3 hectares
EXPOSURE: Southeast

SOIL COMPOSITION

Sant’Agata Fossili Marls with minor sandy veins.

YEAR OF PLANTING: A mix of old and younger vines.

IN THE VINEYARD

The vineyard was acquired in 2024. Organic fertilisation combined with green manure is planned, with mustard and other suitable cover crops grown between the rows. Leaf removal is carried out selectively according to the climatic conditions of each vintage. Light, late-season bunch thinning is aimed primarily at removing the so-called “grappoli di San Martino” – late-forming secondary bunches – leaving six to seven bunches per vine. Plant protection follows integrated pest management practices.

CERTIFIED PRODUCTION PHILOSOPHY:

SQNPI – Sistema di Qualità Nazionale di Produzione Integrata (National Quality System for Integrated Production). Under the voluntary integrated production scheme, specific technical standards apply to each crop, together with mandatory plant-protection guidelines. These set out defined agronomic practices and place restrictions on both the choice of plant protection products and the number of treatments permitted. The aim is to reduce chemical interventions, giving greater space to mechanical and more sustainable practices.

VINIFICATION

The first vintage to be released, in 2027, will be the 2023, produced from grapes purchased from third-party growers prior to the acquisition of the vineyard. Fermentation and maceration take place in stainless-steel tanks for approximately 15 days in total, with two manual pump-overs per day. The wine remains in stainless steel until malolactic fermentation is complete.

AGEING

Minimum 12 months in large Allier French oak casks, followed by a minimum of 12 months in bottle.
